The Evolution Of Gaming Systems

Using computers for playing games has evolved a lot over the years from the introdution to the first commercially available computer in 1981 to the modern systems we have today.

 

Below is a timeline showing the evolution of computer systemms

August, 1972 - Magnavox odyssey

The Magnavox odyysey is the first commercial in-home games console. This system was released in August of 1972 by Atari

November 11, 1972 - Pong

in 1972 Atari developed a tennis sports video game in which two sides faced eachother to hit the ball passed the other box. Pong became the first commercially successful coin operated arcade game.

1978 - Space invaders

in 1978 Taito releases space invaders which becomes the first ever blockbuster arcade video game.

May 27, 1980 - Pac Man

In 1980 namco launched Puck Man in japan. When the US picked up the game Puck man was turned to Pac man becuase they thought kids would write over the "P" with an "F".

August 12, 1981 - The IBM personal computer

In 1981 th IBM personel computer was announced at a price of $1,565 (£1118.78). This computer was much more powerful than the computers that came before which often cost in the millions. This computer was able to play games and process text.

Juanuary, 1982 - Commodore 64

The Commodore 64 it is listed in the Guinness world records as the highest selling computer model of all time. This computer was named 64 becuase of the 64 Kilobytes of RAM

January 24, 1984 - Apple Macintosh

In 1984 Steve Jobs from apple introduced the macintosh. This was the first mass market PC featuring an intergrated GUI and mouse.

April 21, 1989 - Game Boy

In 1989 the gameboy was released by nintendo. This small handheld console was a major success. The Game Boy and the Game Boy colour sold 118.69 million units combined.

August, 1989 - Sega Genisis

The Sega Genesis also known as the Mega Drive, this console made by Sega was extremely popular selling 30.75 million units worldwide.

1990 - TurboExpress

The TurboExpress was released in 1990 as a small portable version of the TurboGrafx. This console was much more powerful than the gameboy and included TurboLink which allowed Co-op play.

1990 - Sega Game Gear

The game gear by sega was released in japan in 1990 with good success. They were also planning on releasing a successor to this model which included touchscreen but they decided not to at the time becuase of the expense.

August, 1991 - Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES)

in 1991 nintendo released SNES nintendo's second home console system. The SNES was a global success competing with the Sega Genesis. This system is still extremely popular.

November, 1993 - Atari Jaguar

In 1993 Atari released the Atari Jaguar costing alot less than others at $100 (£70). The Jaguar sales fell after the release of the sony playstation and would become the last console by Atari.

September 9, 1995 - Sony Playstation

In 1995 the Japanese company Sony released its first console. This console was hugely successful and shipped 100 million units.

September 29, 1996 - Nintendo 64

In 1996 Nintendo released another console under the codename of Project reality. This console was very successful selling 32.93 million units.

September 9, 1999 - Sega Dreamcast

January 01, 2020

in 1999 Sega released the dreamcast the first sixth generation of games consoles. This system didnt sell well which was a huge loss for Sega. The dreamcast was then withdrawn and discontinued.

October 26, 2000 - Sony Playstation 2

In the year of 2000 Sony relased their second console name Playstation 2. This console was the best selling console in video game history selling 155 million units worldwide.

2001 - Game Boy Advance

In 2001 Nintendo released the Game Boy Advance, this handheld device had a much larger screen and more processing power than the original Game Boy and also included a frontlit display in colour and a rechargable battery.

November, 2004 - Nintendo DS

In 2004 Nintendo released the DS. This Handheld gaming system had two screens, the top screen was used for the games display and the bottom a touch screen display was used for extra controls.

December 12, 2004 - PlayStation Portable

In late 2004 Sony released the PSP. This powerful devise used an optical disk format unlike others. Games, films and TV shows were released for use with this device.

June 25, 2014 - Android TV

In 2014 Google announced thier Android TV operating system, this was put on Android boxes like the nexus player. Later in 2015 TV manufacturers started putting the Android TV on thier smart TV's. This software allows games to be played downlaoded and played from the Play store.

November 19, 2014 - Fire TV stick

In 2014 Amazon released the Fire TV stick a smaller version of the Fire TV. With this device you can watch TV shows and movies from Amazon prime and even play games which are downloaded from the Amazon app store.
